Getting to York
Enjoying the benefits of excellent rail and motorway networks, York is undoubtedly one of the most easily accessible cities in the UK. York is ideally positioned in the heart of the country with direct rail links bringing you from London, Edinburgh, and Manchester in around 2 hours. Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds/Bradford airports are within easy reach.
By Air
Although the nearest airport to York is Leeds-Bradford International Airport, Manchester Airport is much bigger and the transport links to York are very convenient. Alternative convenient airports aside from Manchester and Leeds-Bradford are Newcastle or London airports. Smaller airports within reach are Humberside, Durham Tees Valley, Liverpool, Doncaster-Sheffield. The best way to get to York from the airports is by train; see “Getting to campus” section below for directions to the conference venue from the York railway station.
- Manchester Airport
Manchester airport contains an integrated railway station, which offers fast and frequent train services to York via the First TransPennine Express. The travel time is just under two hours, and a single ticket costs as little as £7.00, if booked in advance. More information, such as timetables and how to book tickets can be found at the First TransPennine Express website, or alternatively at the National Rail Enquiries website. The station can be easily reached from the terminal buildings using the Skylink moving walkways, and any rail tickets that were booked online can be collected from the self-service ticket machines in the baggage reclaim halls. Alternatively, you can buy your tickets directly from the booking office in the rail station, but this could prove to be more expensive.
- Leeds Bradford International Airport
Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBA) is approximately 30 miles from the university, and also York city centre. Upon arrival at the airport, visitors can travel to the city by taxi or train.
Leaving the airport by taxi: Arrow Private Hire taxis are available at LBA by pre-booking at the office located outside the main terminal, by telephoning +44 (0)1132585888 or using the online booking tool. Up to 6 seats are available along with wheelchair accessible vehicles. The price of the journey from the airport to York is £62, and cash, credit or debit cards are all accepted forms of payment.
Leaving the airport by train: The nearest mainline railway station to LBA is Leeds, and can be reached by taking the 757 Airport Direct service. Buses run every 30 minutes throughout the day, taking approximately 30 minutes to reach Leeds City Square (the railway station stop). Airport-Leeds City Square single tickets cost £2.50 (correct at time of writing), and more information can be found at the West Yorkshire Metro Website.
Once at the Leeds station, trains to York leave approximately every 30 minutes, and a single ticket costs £11.00 (correct at time of writing). For more information check the National Rail Enquiries website for up-to-date times, and to book tickets online.
The train journey will take approximately 25 minutes.
- Newcastle International Airport
Newcastle International Airport is well connected to the north east by the Metro, Newcastle’s inner city rail system. There is a direct link from the airport to Newcastle Central Station, and the journey time is less than 30 minutes to Newcastle Central Station, and a single ticket costs £3.00. Once at the station, trains to York leave approximately every 20 minutes, and a single ticket costs £6.50 if booked in advance online (correct at time of writing). For more information check the National Rail Enquiries website for up-to-date times, and to book tickets online.
The train journey will take approximately 1 hour.
- London based airports
Travel to York can be achieved by catching a shuttle bus or train link into central London, and then a train from London Kings Cross to York (please note that the last train usually departs at 10 pm). The most convenient way of getting to Kings Cross station from Heathrow is by the Underground Picadilly line. From Gatwick, there are direct trains to St Pancras station in London which is within walking distance from Kings Cross. A notable alternative to the underground and rail services from the London airports is to catch a National Express coach directly to York. By Rail
Eurostar provides convenient connections between York and major European cities (e.g., Brussels and Paris).
York is on the main East Coast Line from London King's Cross to Edinburgh, with fast trains leaving from both north and south every half an hour throughout the day, with a journey time roughly two hours. There is also a direct service across the Pennines between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport. Tickets bought for a specific train in advance are often significantly cheaper than tickets bought at the railway station.
By Road
Situated midway between Edinburgh and London, just 20 minutes from the M1/M62 motorway network, York is within comfortable travelling times of most regions in the UK.
The best way to plan your journey is to use the online planners such as Google maps, or the AA Route Planner.
The postcode to use for the Department of Chemistry is York, YO10 5DD.
Visitors approaching York from the south or west on the A64 should turn off at one of the exits marked University (A19 or A1079), in order to avoid the City centre. Subsequent turns are also signposted.
Visitors coming from other directions should take the Selby road (A19) to Fulford and follow signs to the University.
Car Parking
Car parking in University car parks is extremely limited and a permit is required. This will need to be booked and arranged in advance, so please contact the local organisers as soon as possible.
Getting to Campus
You will need to get a bus or a taxi from the York railway station to the campus, as the University is two miles away in the village of Heslington. This can be achieved by using either the First ftr bus service (service no. 4), or the York Pullman unibus service (service no. 44). The journey time is only 15 minutes, and the service runs every 15 minutes, and the stop for the Department of Chemistry is the Science Park University Road. A journey by taxi from the railway station to the University will take approximately 15 minutes (cost around £7). There is a taxi rank just outside the station. All events taking place during the conference are held within 10 minutes walking distance (including the accommodation, lectures and evening meals).
